Wednesday October 11

In Attendance: Jacquie Fleming, Bailey Bennett, Connie Shurtz, Clarissa Foss, Tasha Reeve, Marlin Hogg, Jamie Jensen, Elaine Ross, Kerry Taylor, Alana Sala, Rachael Miller, Karen Salmon

Volunteering- Jacquie Fleming
  • Thank you to all the Picture Day volunteers and thank you in advance to all the Book Fair volunteers.
  • Discussion about ending the RES Parent Awareness Group and only have the Raymond Elementary School Facebook page. School council agreed that the best way to find volunteers is through the RES Parent Awareness Group, so we will keep it running for that purpose.
  • We will keep encouraging parents to “like” the Raymond Elementary School Facebook page. 
  • Thank you to the school for updating the Facebook page so often. 


Principal’s Report- Marlin Hogg
  • The Red Shoe award was given to Mrs. Bevans in Division 1 and the Grace 6 team in Division 2 for going the extra distance for children. They will select the recipients for next months award. 
  • The Red Shoe keychain has been given to others who go the extra distance for the students: School Council, Central Office, authors, Juno Award winning band, and an expert from the U of L.
  • Outcome Based Reporting is being implemented this year. Some grades have started doing monthly report cards already. They will be sent out every 1-2 months based on your child’s grade level. 
  • Marlin asked for school council’s feedback on the new report cards
  • Positive feedback was given and it was noted that parents really appreciate social/behavioral comments in addition to academic
  • There will no longer be a designated parent teacher interview night. If there are concerns about your child’s progress you are encouraged to make an appointment to see a teacher when the occasion arises. 

Healthy Snack Fridge Volunteer- Jacquie Fleming
  • Karen Salmon voted in. Saray Salmon will be on her committee. 
  • Congratulations to Karen for her new paid position as the School Nutrition Leader. 
  • The school received a grant to fund the School Nutritional Program. Breakfasts, snacks, and bag lunch will be provided for hungry students using this grant money. 
  • Students with full bellies learn better - no students will be turned away. 
  • Parent Link Centre is now open at 7:30 AM for kids who are dropped off early.

School Council Goals- Jacquie Fleming
  • Goals for 2017 with minor changes being made.
  • School Council will review goals on their own and share the changes made on social media.
  • Rachael looking into doing a spreadsheet for data collection of parents’ expertise

Gluten Allergies- Jacquie Fleming
  • School Council will find a parent volunteer to collaborate with the school 

Fundraising- Jacquie Fleming
  • Discussion on what the school needs: 
    • Different workshops to bring in for the students- art, science, music, authors 
    • Equipment for year end carnival and winter olympics
  • Ways to fundraise:
    • Online bake sale in the new year
    • Auction students’ artwork
    • Kernels popcorn and beef jerky
    • Sweet Sheets
    • Golden Girls Ceramics
  • Discussed a possible skate exchange in preparation for the School skating season- potential to work with the Parent Link Centre

ASCA Updates- Alana Sala

  • Webinar recordings such as roles of chair, how to take minutes, purpose of school councils are available on the website
  • There are different awards that parents or schools can nominate school councils for
